THE SPOKEN THREAD

Some things are different when they're spoken aloud.

My writing and art come from a life I've actually lived—

the years of losing myself and finding my way back, the body that changed everything I thought I knew,

the creative work that became a way of staying connected to myself, and what it means now to live from what all of it has taught me.

These are the conversations I'm drawn to.

Not conversations in which I arrive with answers, but ones where lived experience opens the door to something real—

about aging, identity, creativity, the body, beginning again, and the courage it takes to live your own life from the inside.

The Spoken Thread is where those conversations have a voice.

WHEN WE  BEGIN TALKING

I’m most interested in conversations that have room to wander beyond the expected questions.

We might begin with a book, a painting, the body, aging, creativity, or a life that has changed—

and find ourselves somewhere neither of us quite expected to go.

There are some threads I return to again and again:

When the life you knew no longer fits who you've become

There are times when the identities, roles, relationships, or ways of living that once made sense begin to feel out of step with who you are now. I know what it is to reach that place. Beginning again isn’t always about rebuilding what was there before. Sometimes it means being willing to recognize how much you’ve changed—and allowing your life to change with you.

When your body changes the plan
My body has changed the course of my life more than once. Illness forced me to question much of what I believed about strength, productivity, healing, and what it meant to keep going. It has taught me that the body isn’t an obstacle to the life I want to live. It is part of the life I’m living.

Creativity as a way back to yourself.

Painting, writing, sewing, and working with cloth have been with me through illness, loss, change, and times when I didn’t know what came next. Creativity has never been only about what I produce. Sometimes it has kept me connected to myself when very little else did. Sometimes what appeared in a painting showed me something about my life before I was ready to see it. And sometimes the simple act of working with my hands gave me somewhere to be when I had no idea what to do next.

Growing older without becoming smaller
Aging has brought me face-to-face with the ways women are taught to disappear, apologize for taking up space, or measure themselves against who they used to be. I’m far more interested in what becomes possible when we stop trying to preserve an earlier version of ourselves and let ourselves become who we are now.

When you stop letting other people tell you who you are
For much of my life, I saw myself through other people’s eyes. Their judgments, expectations, approval, and disappointment shaped more of my choices than I understood at the time. Learning to trust what I know about myself has changed what I say yes to, what I walk away from, how I create, and how willing I am to make myself smaller for someone else’s comfort.

BEGIN A CONVERSATION

I’m always interested in conversations that leave room for something real to happen.

If you host a podcast, interview series, or other conversation-based space and something here feels connected to what you’re exploring, I’d be glad to hear from you.
