SOUL PORTRAITS
A different way of seeing yourself.
A Soul Portrait begins with you—not with how you look, but with what I sense as I listen to you and spend time with your story.

I’m not trying to capture a likeness or tell you who you are. I’m allowing another kind of portrait to emerge through color, image, movement, and symbol—one that reflects something of you that may not have a visible form.
​
Sometimes we recognize ourselves differently when we are seen through another pair of eyes.
WHAT IS A SOUL PORTRAIT
A Soul Portrait is not a traditional portrait.
​
When I create one, I’m not painting your physical appearance. I’m listening to you—your stories, the experiences that have shaped you, what matters to you, and the qualities I begin to sense as we spend time together.
​
From there, I take what I’ve received into the studio and begin to paint. I don’t start with a plan for what you should look like on the canvas. I work intuitively, allowing colors, forms, images, and symbols to appear as the painting develops. Some arrive with a meaning I understand immediately. Others reveal themselves later.

What emerges is my response to you—not a definition of who you are, but a reflection
of what I encountered while listening to you.
​
And then the painting becomes yours.
​
You may see things in it that I saw while creating it.
You may discover things I never saw at all. Its meaning doesn’t have to be decided when you first receive it.
Like any work of art that becomes part of your life, your relationship with it can continue to unfold.
THE PROCESS
Every Soul Portrait begins with a conversation.

Before we meet, I’ll send you a few questions—not because I need you to explain who you are, but to give you a place to begin. Then we’ll spend time together, in person or by video, talking about your life, what matters to you, the experiences that have shaped you, and whatever feels important to bring into the conversation.
Afterward, I take that time with you into the studio and begin to paint.

There is no sketch or predetermined image waiting to be filled in.
I work slowly and intuitively, following color, movement, image, and symbol as the painting takes form. I may return to something you said, remember the way you spoke about a particular part of your life, or find myself drawn toward an image without knowing yet why it belongs.
​
Partway through, I’ll share the painting with you. This gives us a chance to talk about what is emerging, what you are seeing in it, and anything the work is beginning to stir or reveal for you.
​
Then I return to the studio and continue until the painting feels complete.
​
When it is finished, I’ll share the completed Soul Portrait with you along with some of what I experienced and noticed while creating it. From there, the painting becomes yours—
not only as a work of art, but as something you can continue to discover in your own way and in your own time.
COMMISSIONING A SOUL PORTRAIT
I create only a limited number of Soul Portraits each year so I can give each one the time and attention it asks of me.
