"I grew up in a time when our culture was in an uproar. All norms were being challenged. But women were still under men’s thumb. Somewhere deep within me, I remembered who I was, the third Priestess/Witch whose power for good could heal the world. I dare not speak it though. Times were changing, but it was still too soon for the truth to be told.
I watched my brilliant mother wither under my father’s judgment and patriarchal power. I listened as he told me to shush my own thoughts in favor of keeping the peace with my family. Even when he knew I spoke the truth, he wouldn’t allow it to interfere with the status quo of our quietly abusive family unit. Both my parents had grown up with abuse and my experience was no different. Just like patriarchal views are passed down from generation to generation, so are patterns that perpetuate abusive behavior. Ours was a quiet form of it all. Perhaps my father’s disappointment over me being born female was part of it, or maybe it was that I scared both my parents so much. I was different and not easily hushed. However, the patterns became part of my DNA and it would take a lifetime to break them. "
